Thursday, June 24, 2010, is Guest Speaker Night at the Nashville workshop with Phil Goldberg speaking on "You Should've Seen It In Color: Using Imagery Effectively"
This workshop is a webcast, click here to watch live webcast.
A picture may be worth a thousand words. You'll be lucky if you have a few hundred words to create your lyrical pictures. How do you keep your images and metaphors fresh...conversational...understandable?
Music Row Magazine periodically publishes articles on the cliches that show up in country lyrics. You know 'em when you hear 'em: pickup trucks 'n' cowboy hats 'n' fill-in-the-blank-with-your-personal-favorite. Yet, you can have a song such as Jason Aldean's "Hicktown" where the lyrics are distinctive, and a familiar subject is retold in an unfamiliar way. You'll never forget that reference to the butt crack!
Different genres of music can call for different techniques in creating your imagery. Brad Paisley's "Water" uses its images in a straightforward manner. Lady Antebellum's "American Honey" travels a different route. And what about Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" or John Mayer's "Heartbreak Warfare"? As soon as Iyaz says that thoughts of his girlfriend are stuck in his head "like my iPod's stuck on replay," you can identify. Fresh, singable, and you know exactly what he means.
All this and more, as Phil discusses imagery.
About Phil: Phil Goldberg is the former NSAI Member Services Director and curretnly a consultant to NSAI. Over the years, he has administered the NSAI Bookstore and Song Evaluation Service, and has counseled songwriters. He has written for The Songwriter's Market, American Songwriter, and the NSAI Newswire. Phil has taught at NSAI's Song Camps and Songposiums and at seminars, including those on country, Contemporary Christian and urban music. Before moving to Nashville, he ran a weekly workshop for the National Academy of Songwriters in Los Angeles. He has put together creative writing lessons used by the NSAI Regional Workshop program around the world. NSAI members can listen to eight of Phil's lectures on the NSAI website. Those online talks include "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" (January 15, 2009), "Taking the Road Not Taken" (June 14, 2007), and "I Object" (April 27, 2006).
